Homework
Homework
Please check your child’s MOOSE book every day, review what we have been working on, and complete the work that needs to be completed. It will be the first grader’s responsibility to hand in their work into the “Jungle Box” on my desk everyday. Please use the Teacher Ease site to check your child’s progress.
Homework is a very worthwhile part of your child's day and it is very important to his or her success in school. We use it as a way to review and practice important skills learned in the classroom.
Homework encourages responsibility and should be viewed as a way to help your child succeed in school. One way to teach responsibility is by expecting your child to complete their homework daily and return it.
Some ways families can help their
child with homework are:
Have a specific time each day to complete homework.
Make sure it is in a quiet, comfortable, well-lit place.
Make sure there are no distractions (loud music, TV blaring, video games.)
Help your child, but do not do their homework for them.
Please go to Favorite Websites and our Curriculum Site to find games, activities, and different learning sites.

Please check for the Math worksheets that we did during the day. Have your child fix or finish what needs to be completed. This is a great way to reinforce the skill that we covered that day.

Math Speed Tests begin in January. They can be found on the Curriculum site. Please practice to help with memorization and speed.

Sight Words
Please study the Sight Words that are sent home every Monday. They will be verbally quizzed every Friday. Sight Word Activity Sheets are done the first 6 weeks of school. To print a sheet, click below.
They can also be found on Spelling City’s website. Click on Find a List and then Sondej.
Reading
Reading every day is critical in first grade. Helping sound out letters and words, asking questions for comprehension, and modeling reading are a few ways to help your child. Repetition of stories and rhyming books are great for this age group. Books on tape/cd and stories online can help children hear how sounds are formed and how to read with fluency.
Reading Calendars
We are enrolled in the BOOK IT program! I will begin collecting Reading Logs during the month of October through March. I am asking the first graders to read 20 minutes a night. They will get a monthly pizza certificate when they complete this. This homework is considered part of our Language Arts homework. It will be counted as a grade.
Reading Logs:
Writing
We learn how to form our letters correctly and where to properly put them on our handwriting lines. First graders will have homework to fix their letters to help with this skill.
We will be doing a lot of writing! It is great practice to have your child use their Sight Words and Spelling Words to write sentences. Please help them to sound out and fix their words. We will also be working with capital letters and punctuation marks.

Spelling
We begin taking 10 word Spelling Tests in October every Friday (Thursday if there is no school on Friday). Children will get these words on Monday to practice for the week. We take a practice Spelling Test every Thursday. Please study any incorrect words for Friday’s test. We write our Spelling Words in our assignment notebooks and they can be found on
Children are reminded before each test to not use capital letters, bubble dots, or backwards letters.
Homework
If any words are marked wrong on the test, they need to be written 10x and returned on Monday. Children will get a Homework slip (after they are individually asked to double check their MOOSE book). Homework passes can be used.
